Biography

Born in 1924, he was commissioned as an officer in the DLI in 1943 and served in Normandy in 1944, where he was wounded. In August 1965 Lieutenant Colonel Maughan took command of the 1st Battalion DLI and led the Durhams in their last campaign on the island of Borneo.

He remained in command until February 1968 and helped prepare for the final disbanding of the Regiment and its integration into The Light Infantry in July 1968. For his "command and leadership under the most difficult conditions" he was awarded the OBE.

Gil Maughan died in Brussels in November 1996.
